Whatcha gonna do in Wichita?

Wichita, Kansas - a destination full of many things to see, do, taste, and experience! Wichita is known as the “Air Capital of the World”, and plays host to many great events, including the 1st and 2nd rounds of the NCAA mens basketball tournament in March 2018!

When visiting Wichita one of the "must see and do" things you should make time for is the Keeper of the Plains and seeing the “Rings of Fire” - which is viewable for 15 minutes, at 9 PM Central (during Daylight Saving Time, spring and summer), and at 7 PM Central (during standard time, fall and winter). The Keeper of the Plains statue is in a special place of the city, where the Big and Little Arkansas rivers meet in downtown Wichita. Fun fact — when in Kansas, the Arkansas River is said with pronunciation of “R-Kansas”.

Depending on how much time you have to explore Wichita, they have a fantastic zoo! The Sedgwick County Zoo is a incredible zoo that gives the animals a lot of space in their environments (the zoo sit on 247 acres), and is also home to the third largest zoo elephant habitat in the nation. There are a large variety of species (elephants, gorillas, tigers, birds, giraffes, penguins, lions, etc.) to see and learn about when visiting this zoo!

There are other family friendly activities that you can do while visiting Wichita and some of these could include a visit to the Exploration Place (science center), or a visit to Old Cowtown Museum to learn about Wichita in the late 1800’s through a living history museum while interacting with the townspeople.

Wichita is also home to a great food and drink scene. If you are looking for some fabulous barbecue, make sure to stop by Bite Me BBQ, anything you pick you can’t go wrong with, and if you are even remotely thinking about ordering the ribs, just do it - you will not regret it! The Monarch is a restaurant that has one of the largest bourbon and whiskey collections in the State of Kansas - along with offering local craft beers. River City Brewing Company has a fantastic selection craft brews to pick from, and this was the first place, that I’ve ever had “fried chicken mac and cheese” - which was an incredible as it sounds!!

Either Milk Float or Donut Whole are fun places to pick up a sweet treat; Milk Float makes coffee and milkshakes along with homemade pastries (think homemade pop tarts, cookies, etc.); while Donut Whole has some really fun and unique flavors of donuts (think Fruity Pebbles, maple bacon, etc.). Hoping Gnome Brewery is a very chill spot with a vintage feel and a great selection of microbrews. Public at the Brickyard is a restaurant that uses super fresh ingredients in their meals and craft cocktails - and they have great patio seating options and are known for having live music.

Mort’s Martini & Cigar Bar is a fun option for adults, they have live music, a vast menu of martini’s to pick from and a great selection of cigars - they even have this complimentary really yummy jalapeño popcorn that you can snack on while enjoying a nice delicious martini.

Overall there are many great things to see and do while you are in Wichita! If you have any questions while you are visiting, you should stop by and see the great team at the Visit Wichita visitors information center (515 S. Main Street), I'm sure they’d be happy to help!

Below is a video to help provide a better idea of some of the key highlights you can enjoy while in Wichita - hope you enjoy your visit!
