New york, New york!

A weekend visit to the Big Apple!

In the middle of February I headed out to New York City for a business trip, and was fortunate enough to fly out a couple days before and enjoy the weekend in the city with my cousin who lives there. I’ve been to NYC a few times and each time there is something new and exciting to check out… and on my more recent trips, I’ve really enjoyed experiencing the city a little more from a local’s perspective.

While running some errands with my cousin we came across a really cool new spot and concept in the city. Nap York!

Nap York is the perfect oasis that allows you the option to stop in and recharge (both yourself and your devices)! When we stopped in they mentioned they had only been open for a few weeks… they are located in the busy area of 36th Street and 7th Avenue, and each level has something different to offer. As soon as you enter almost immediately you get the feeling of being rested.

On the ground level there is a quaint cafe with healthy meal and snack options; on the second level there are the nap pods where you can lay down for 30 minutes and it will only cost $10; from there they have a focus floor that allows you to get some work done in a quiet place for $9 for a half hour; and also have some of the egg chairs where you can charge you phone, while either taking a nap or getting a little quiet work done. Nap York also offers daily yoga and meditation classes built around mindful interactions, sustainable practices, and wellness. The Nap York employee that we spoke with even mentioned that in the Summer, they are looking to make use of the rooftop and put hammocks up there. They even offer luggage storage and Tesla shuttle service. The next time I’m back in NYC, I look forward to stopping in Nap York for a little R&R - after all, where else can you lay in a hammock in busy NYC!

While I was in town they experienced a cold spell on that Saturday with some unexpected snow - which meant it made it the perfect day to check out a museum and try to stay indoors a bit.

A visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (a.k.a. the Met) is where we headed, and it seemed that many others had the same thought. One thing that is cool about the Met is that for admission, you have an option to pay what you choose - which this recently changed on March 1, 2018 and is now only applicable to local residents, but the admission is still fairly reasonable at $25 for a non-resident. There are so many different exhibits within the Met and it is basically impossible to see everything in one-day, the best suggestion would be pick a couple of exhibits to start with and then see how you are feeling after viewing those exhibits. You are not allowed to have beverages with you, so if you get thirsty you will need to stop at one of their cafe options for something to drink.

New York City offers so many different great food options, and on this visit, it was fun trying all kinds of different things. Thai food at Sticky Rice (offers an atmosphere almost as if you were in Thailand), Irving Farm Coffee Roasters for coffee and for quick breakfast options, Emporio for a great Italian dinner, Apotheke for craft cocktails and a mini-dance party, Sunday brunch at the Farmhouse Restaurant, indulging on red velvet cookie dough at DO - Cookie Dough Confections, warm Pho at Hello Saigon, and a juicy pastrami sandwich with matzo ball soup from the famous Katz’s Deli.

No visit to New York City would be complete without at least a short visit in Times Square. NYC in general is a city full of hustle and bustle, and Times Square with all the neon signs and lights, exudes the inspiration and dreams that many come to this city for - as the song says, “if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere”.

The key thing to remember when visiting New York City, is to make sure to wear shoes you can comfortably walk around in - as there is much to see and do!
